Definition of Cyber Engineering

I’m serving on one of the Houston universities advisory board for new engineering school. I was asked to send my definition of Cyber Engineering. That was my response:

I started with the definition of cyber. There are a lot of definitions for this word , but the most common one is “Computer Related”. If we will use this definition we will have computer related engineering school :-), not what we are looking for.

When people say Cyber, most of them refer to the Internet or to any interlink networks of computer that enable the Internet and all the devices that enable people and solution to be connected. Inter-connectivity enabled by usage of common interfaces which based on standards. Inter-connectivity enables creation of separate physical compute and storage infrastructures that can scale infinitely due to connectivity. This platform enables new business, solutions and technologies that in my point of view are responsible to the new industrial revolution we start to experience and will reach maturity with full implementation of Internet of Things (IoT). I see all of that as Cyber.

Therefore the definition of cyber in one sentence will be:

“New type of businesses, solutions and technologies enabled by platform of (standards based) interconnected highly salable compute and storage which are driving new fundamental change in humanity. ”

Cyber engineering will be:

“Architecting, designing, creating and maintaining, New type of businesses, solutions, technologies and platform of (standards based) interconnected highly salable compute and storage which support new fundamental change in humanity. “
